INDIANAPOLIS—On Tuesday, the Indiana Senate approved three proposals advocated for by State Senator Jim Arnold (D-LaPorte) that would affect Hoosier veterans and their families. These bills, co-authored by Sen. Arnold, will help military families maintain Medicaid status and ensure all Hoosier veterans receive proper military burials.

Sen. Arnold co-authored Senate Bill (SB) 76 to ensure that families of an active member serving outside the United States can maintain eligibility for Medicaid.

“When our active service men and women serve abroad, they should be reassured that our state continues to take care of their families, particularly when they face medical hardship,” said Sen. Arnold.

Sen. Arnold also authored SB 145 in an effort to ensure all Hoosier veterans receive proper military burials and would require the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) to work with veteran’s organizations to reestablish their standards regarding unclaimed veterans’ remains. SB 145 would also allow licensed funeral directors to release information pertaining to a veteran’s eligibility for burial in a state or national cemetery.

Additionally, SB 154, co-authored by Sen. Arnold, would increase the funeral allowance to $8,800 for members of the Indiana National Guard who die in the active service of the state. The budget currently allowed for active members’ funeral services is currently at $4,000.

“It is imperative that the state’s statute reflects the needs of Hoosier veterans and their families,” said Sen. Arnold. “These proposals will help to ensure all Hoosiers killed in the line of duty are buried with the dignity and respect that they deserve.”

The three proposals were unanimously approved by the full Senate and now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

Sen. Arnold represents Indiana Senate District 8, which includes the majority of LaPorte county and portions of St. Joseph and Starke counties. For more information on Sen. Arnold, his legislative agenda, or other State Senate business call 1-800-382-9467 or visit
