INDIANAPOLIS – On Thursday, the American Civil Liberty Union of Indiana (ACLU) announced a lawsuit against the state of Indiana in response to the passage of House Bill (HB) 1211 which banned the most common second trimester abortion procedure. State Senator Jean Breaux (D-Indianapolis) had the following comments on the announcement of the lawsuit:

“The Republican supermajority consistently attempts to strip the rights of Hoosier women to determine what happens to their own bodies. This type of abortion is used less than 30 times a year in Indiana and generally only in life-saving circumstances.

“The ACLU testified in committee and warned the state that they would sue if the legislature passed this bill, and they made true on their promise. Between 2011 and 2017, Indiana paid $2,831,532.99 to defend unconstitutional abortion laws, including paying legal fees to the ACLU when laws are struck down. Passing legislation like HB 1211 is a misguided use of taxpayer dollars.”
