Happy Halloween, Hoosiers!

With Halloween just around the corner and with Indiana fall weather finally setting in, the Indiana Senate Democrats want to help you get prepared for your Halloween festivities. Most importantly, we want to make sure your family is safe while out trick-or-treating. Check out our top Halloween safety tips below. Halloween may be a spooky holiday, but that doesn’t mean it has to be dangerous!

  1. Go in groups
Trick-or-treating is safer and more fun when you’re in a group! Get a few adults together and make a fun night of it. If you feel like your children will do well on their own, make sure they go with a group of friends. Don’t forget a cell phone in case of emergencies!
  2. Stay on the sidewalks
The excitement of costumes and candy sometimes means kids are sprinting from door to door. Try to encourage your kids to stay on the sidewalks, only crossing the road when it’s safe and necessary. If there are no sidewalks where you live, keeping to the far edge of the road is safest.
  3. Check out your candy
Candy and treats should come in individually wrapped bags, so definitely raise a red flag if you see anything come unwrapped. Always be cautious of homemade treats you get from strangers.
  4. Choose to be visible
It will start getting dark earlier in the day once Halloween arrives! Bright-colored costumes or a bit of reflective tape is an easy way to make sure your kids are seen in the dim light. To light up the night even more, pass out flashlights or glow sticks to all the kids as they conquer their candy-seeking adventure.
  5. Use discretion when opening the door
For those staying at home to greet eager trick-or-treaters, keep an eye on your front door before you open it when the doorbell rings. While most people coming to your door on Halloween night are innocent trick-or-treaters, we still encourage you to be cautious when opening the door. If you ever feel uneasy about the person coming to the door, don’t hesitate to keep it closed.
  6. Find a nice spot for your pets
We all want our pets to enjoy the holiday festivities with us, but a loud animal may be scary to some trick-or-treaters. Plus, with little ones out and about, it’s best not to risk having a runaway animal that could accidentally knock over a visitor. We think it’s best to keep all your pets securely kept in your house until all the commotion ceases for the night.

Now that you’re ready to celebrate Halloween, check out the trick-or-treat times in our districts.
