INDIANAPOLIS –Today the Indiana Senate approved Senate Bill (SB) 276, which includes language for a prekindergarten (pre-K) expansion. State Senator Karen Tallian (D-Portage) offered the following statements upon the legislation’s passage:
“Currently, the state spends $10 million for pre-K programs in only five of the ninety-two counties in our state. SB 276 increases the funding by $6 million and now includes all of the counties in the state. This is nowhere near the proper funding.
“Of the new $6 million set aside for the pre-K expansion, $1 million must be used to fund a private program so parents may home school their pre-K children. This nets $5 million to expand to 87 additional counties.
“This funding scheme will allow for less than 1,000 additional students to have access to high-quality preschool options in the state.
“I expect to advocate for additional funds as we move through the budget process.”
Sen. Tallian represents Senate District 4 which encompasses portions of northern Porter County as well as portions of Michigan, Coolspring and New Durham townships in LaPorte County.
