INDIANAPOLIS—Indiana Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) and State Representative David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) met with Department of Child Services (DCS) Director Judge Mary Beth Bonaventura this afternoon to discuss the department’s failure to comply with the state’s caseload standards for family case managers. The legislators released the following statement:
“We are encouraged by the meeting that we had with Director Bonaventura and are cautiously optimistic that our exchange will lead to an outcome that ensures we are doing our job to keep our state’s most vulnerable children safe.
“Due diligence suggests we look at hiring more caseworkers and we think that is the direction we are heading.
“Ultimately, we’ll continue to press for justification for not complying with the standards as they are outlined by the law.
“We will continue to emphasize the pressing need to provide adequate support for our caseworkers and vow to assist in finding the resources the agency needs.
“The problems here demand immediate action. We will continue to insist that a more definitive answer be provided by the agency by the start of session.”
