INDIANAPOLIS—Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) issued the following statement in response to the governor’s latest proposal to adapt the Healthy Indiana Plan towards the implementation of the new health care law.

“For those of us who have said all along the Affordable Care Act addresses the unfulfilled health needs of Hoosiers, we are encouraged by any effort that seems to embrace the gaps that have routinely been ignored and that pose a huge problem for our state.

“Indiana is ranked 41st in overall health and thousands of Hoosiers in the coverage gap have experienced negative health outcomes for years. Up until now Statehouse Republicans have played politics with their health and that is simply inexcusable.

“Hopefully this signals a change of heart in the governor’s approach to giving Hoosiers the health care options they are looking for and provides them with more options than an emergency room visit when they are in need of medical care.

“When cash-strapped working families decide which bills to pay and how to prioritize them, we need to make sure that health care is an affordable option for everyone.

“Finally, we can say Indiana is, at the very least, on track to join the many other states that have given their residents the full options provided for them within the new health care law.

“Indiana may soon see what other states embracing the Affordable Care Act have: more citizens with health care coverage and lower health care costs for consumers.

“It is regrettable it has taken us a year and cost us $1.4 billion before we were able to come up with a plan that the federal government will consider, but in the spirit of better late than never, we are happy to see the start of an acceptable plan.”
