INDIANAPOLIS – Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) sent a letter to Senate President Pro Tempore Long and released the following statement outlining his concerns on the recently released Senate Select Committee on Immigration Issues committee agenda:
“I’m disappointed to see the Senate Select Committee on Immigration Issues – a committee established outside the scope of the standing interim study committee process – will kick-off as a sounding-board for anti-immigration policies.

“Rather than starting this series of committee meetings by including all stakeholders, leadership has invited two of the most controversial voices in immigration policy.

“I urge Senate leadership to provide a more inclusive and balanced environment for their newly-created committee, rather than continue to travel down a road that only serves to divide us.

“The study topics alone, decided on and approved by Senate Republican leadership, once again send the wrong message to Hoosiers by making immigration and immigrants the centerpiece to the ‘problems’ that occur within our economy.

“The most recent and devastating hits to the Hoosier economy have come as a result of outdated policies pushed through by the Republican supermajority.

“Have we not yet learned our lesson how legislating through political grandstanding negatively affects both our state’s image and economy?

“For the last four years, Senate Democrats have actively engaged members of the community who are largely affected by immigration policy.

“By engaging communities in a civil and welcoming conversation, we have been able to identify a number of common-sense solutions aimed at ensuring those seeking a better life in this state can navigate the incredibly complicated process of becoming a citizen and clear the hurdles of discrimination that continue to exist after naturalization.

“We would invite our Senate colleagues to join us in a bi-partisan manner to ensure all who seek a better life as a Hoosier are given the opportunity.”
