INDIANAPOLIS — On Monday, the Interim Study Committee on Commerce and Economic Development discussed a strategic plan to maximize the undeveloped economic opportunities in Gary. The proposal is a result of Senate Resolution 24, authored by State Senator Eddie Melton (D-Gary), which was approved in the 2018 regular legislative session.

“After compelling testimony from world class experts in intermodal terminals, ports and gaming, I think my colleagues in the General Assembly were able to take away just how important the implementation of this plan is not only for the City of Gary but for the entire State of Indiana,” Sen. Melton said. “If Gary were to maximize our existing assets within the footprint of Buffington Harbor, we could essentially transform the local economy for the city and its residents. It is my hope to work with members from both chambers to craft legislation that could move this project forward in 2019.”

Sen. Melton represents Indiana Senate District 3 which encompasses portions of Lake County. District 3 communities include Gary, Lake Station, New Chicago, Hobart, Ainsworth, Merrillville and Crown Point. For more information on Sen.
