INDIANAPOLIS — On Tuesday, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) submitted a teacher shortage list to the U.S. Department of Education in over a dozen different areas. State Senator Eddie Melton (D-Gary), ranking minority member on the Senate Education and Career Development Committee, released the following comments upon the submission by IDOE:

“It is no surprise that Indiana is falling short of educators in so many different subjects of learning. Our teachers are tasked with the impossible with slimmer budgets every year that barely, if ever, account for inflation, and with salaries that have the slowest growth in the entire nation. Our students, our educators and our schools deserve so much better than what this Republican-led state has given them. This shortage of teachers is a cry for help and with a few days left in the 2019 session, I believe it is one that the state legislature can and should answer.”
