INDIANAPOLIS — On Monday, Senate Bill 258, authored by State Senator Frank Mrvan (D- Hammond), was approved by the Senate Committee on Family and Children Services. The proposal would ban sex offenders from working as child care providers or babysitters. It will now go before the full Senate and be eligible for amendments.

“Unfortunately, current law does not restrict all registered sex offenders from working in child care services,” Sen. Mrvan said. “I discovered this last year after learning about an incident where an individual on the sex offender registry was looking for babysitting jobs online. After hearing about this, I immediately began working on legislation to fix the issue. It is imperative that we have the necessary laws in place to keep our children safe and protected.”
