INDIANAPOLIS – On Tuesday, the Senate approved State Senator David Niezgodski’s (D-South Bend) Senate Bill (SB) 513 with a vote of 46-1.
In the event of a natural disaster, this proposal will increase the maximum amount that an individual may receive from the Disaster Relief Fund from $5,000 to $10,000 as compensation for property damages. Sen. Niezgodski had the following comments on the passage of his bill:
“Hoosier families have been devastated by floods in recent years, and $5,000 is just not enough to cover some of these damages. Indiana needs to have the resources and funding to step in on the state level, especially since some of our natural disasters are not wide-reaching enough to receive aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“By allocating more funding to assist those affected by natural disasters, Hoosier families can more quickly bounce back when catastrophes, inevitably, strike our great state.”
SB 513 now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
