INDIANAPOLIS – On Monday, Senate Bill (SB) 285, a proposal concerning mass traffic obstruction by protesters, was approved by the full Senate on second reading. The measure was amended to be sent to a summer study committee rather than being implemented into law. Senator David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) offered the following statement in response to the bill being considered for final approval by the full Senate tomorrow:

“I am opposed to the bill, even as amended.

“This bill has no basis on having any part in this legislature.

“It was simply a bad bill to begin with and there has not been one event in Indiana that this bill would address.

“I hope that a summer study of this issue will reveal that a bill that infringes on Hoosier’s First Amendment rights has dangerous implications and that the study will bring an end to this type of legislation.”
