INDIANAPOLIS – In light of the governor knowing as early as 2017 about the misuse of funds that occurred in the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA), State Senator David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) released the following comments:
“I am very disheartened to hear that many state officials knew about the IDVA’s inappropriate use of funds without notifying other necessary officials,” Sen. Niezgodski said. “It is imperative that we get to the bottom of the state’s botched handling of the IDVA’s misconduct and ensure this misuse of funds meant to assist our veterans doesn’t ever happen again.
“Many officials who should have been notified about these problems simply were not, including members of the Veterans Affairs Commission. To date, no one at the IDVA has even been disciplined as a result of Military Family Relief Fund money being used to benefit employees at the department. The misuse of veterans’ funds must stop. At the end of the day, our veterans and their well-being are what matter most, and those who illegally take from them should be punished.”
