INDIANAPOLIS – On Monday, Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) issued the following statement after the Special Interim Study Committee on Redistricting approved a preliminary draft regarding the formulation of Indiana’s first independent redistricting commission.

“Today, the committee took an essential first step toward implementing an independent redistricting commission to ensure politics are removed from the redistricting process.

“I applaud the bipartisan effort by the committee to provide a fair and balanced look at the redistricting process in Indiana, as well as how those processes could be improved.

“However, I am disappointed with the Senate Republican members’ refusal to support the final recommendations of this committee because I believe this preliminary draft embraces the ideas and goals we had when the committee was formulated.

“Our work is not over. I encourage Hoosiers to remain engaged with this issue next legislative session to ensure that we implement a redistricting process where voters are choosing their elected officials instead of elected officials choosing their voters.”

Sen. Lanane represents Indiana Senate District 25 which includes portions of Madison and Delaware counties, including the City of Muncie and the southeastern portion of the City of Anderson.
