INDIANAPOLIS – State Senator Mark Stoops (D-Bloomington) was recognized as the “Legislator of the Year” by Mental Health America of Indiana (MHAI) for his efforts to improve Hoosiers’ access to mental health services at a symposium on Friday.
The ceremony was held at Union Station in downtown Indianapolis to congratulate Sen. Stoops on his successes during the 2015 legislative session. Sen Stoops helped craft several major new laws that he says will help provide additional protections for mental health patients while offering Hoosiers additional options and avenues for recovery from mental illness or drug addiction. Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 380, SEA 461, SEA 464 and House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1269 were cornerstones of Sen. Stoops’ mental health agenda.
“It is my hope the successes we were able to accomplish this legislative session will go a long way in improving mental health and addiction outcomes for Hoosiers,” said Sen. Stoops. “I am deeply honored to receive this recognition, but there is more work to be done and I look forward to working with groups like Mental Health America of Indiana to achieve these goals.”
The MHAI’s mission is to work for the mental health of all citizens and for victory over mental illness and addictive disorders through public education, advocacy and public health reform. The award was presented by the President and CEO of MHAI, Stephen C. McCaffrey, J.D.
