INDIANAPOLIS –Today, the Indiana Senate considered amendments to Senate Bill (SB) 1, legislation currently before the body to legalize Sunday retail carryout sales of alcohol in Indiana. State Senator Karen Tallian (D-Portage) offered an amendment to the bill removing the noon to 8 p.m. sales restriction that is currently found in SB 1.

“It appears as if the legislature will legalize Sunday carryout sales during this session of the Indiana General Assembly, which is a good thing. However, members are finding a way to muck up this good legislation by limiting the hours that alcohol can be purchased.

“My amendment would expand the sellable hours and keep Sunday hours the same as every other day.

“The members of the Senate and Hoosiers expected a clean bill: Sunday sales, ‘yes or no.’ Instead we have a bill that puts arbitrary limits on the hours of availability.

“I am disappointed that my amendment was defeated on the floor, but I will continue to work with my colleagues to correct this issue this year.”

Sen. Tallian represents Senate District 4 which encompasses portions of northern Porter County as well as portions of Michigan, Coolspring and New Durham townships in LaPorte County.
