INDIANAPOLIS –House Enrolled Act 1507, sponsored by State Senator Karen Tallian (D-Portage), was signed into law today by Governor Eric Holcomb at the Statehouse. The new law permits school corporations to partner with certain outside groups to offer transportation on school corporation buses.
Senator Tallian offered the following remarks after the bill was signed:
“After it was discovered that state law prohibited groups such as the Special Olympics from renting buses from the school corporation, several local legislators worked together to change state law and ensure that these athletes could make it to their competitions.
“I am pleased that the members of the House and Senate moved quickly to pass this legislation through the House and Senate and remedy this issue.
“I’m glad that we were able to assist in getting these athletes, who have practiced for months or years, to their competitions next month.
“A ‘thank you’ also goes to Governor Holcomb for making this the first bill he signed since coming into office.”
Sen. Tallian represents Senate District 4 which encompasses portions of northern Porter County as well as portions of Michigan, Coolspring and New Durham townships in LaPorte County.
