On Monday, former Indiana Planned Parenthood leader and women’s rights activist Betty Cockrum passed away. State Senator Karen Tallian (D-Ogden Dunes) made the following statement in response to the tragic news:

“I am saddened beyond words to hear of Betty’s passing. Betty was a hero and an inspiration to many and a constant fighter for women in the Hoosier state. But, to me, Betty was much more than that. She was a close friend and a constant source of support and encouragement both personally and in my political career. During her 15 years with Planned Parenthood, she demonstrated the utmost integrity and courage, even in the face of constant harassment and threats. Betty’s strength to always do what was right and her fighting spirit will be remembered for years to come. Women across Indiana have lost a champion. She will be sorely missed.”
