Below are some of the bills Senator Lanane worked on during the 2019 legislative session.
Halted predatory lending
Senate Democrats and Senator Lanane worked tirelessly this session to kill proposals that would benefit loan sharks in this state and allow interest rates on small loans to skyrocket to 167 percent. These efforts were not in vain as the proposal died in the final days of the session. Senate Democrats will always fight to protect the financial interests of Hoosiers who are just trying to make ends meet.
Senate Democrats had multiple proposals that would have raised the state’s minimum wage, which has remained stagnant at $7.25 since 2009. With this low wage, no person working full-time makes enough to afford a two-bedroom apartment anywhere in Indiana. Every minimum wage proposal was denied a hearing in their assigned committees. Senator Lanane offered an amendment to the budget that would raise the minimum wage to $11.20 an hour, but that effort was single-handedly defeated by the Republican supermajority.
Legalizing medical marijuana to provide alternative treatment options for Hoosiers was one part of the Senate Democrats’ 2019 legislative agenda. This proposal was not even given a hearing in the committee in which it was assigned. Hoosiers deserve access to medical marijuana just like citizens in 33 other states across the nation, and Senator Lanane will continue to fight so Indiana residents can access the treatment they deserve.
