Below are some of the bills Senator Melton worked on during the 2019 legislative session.
Gary economic development
This session, the legislature passed two major economic development bills that will allow Gary to move one of its casino licenses inland to I-80/94 and open up Buffington Harbor for major development projects. These projects come as a result of a resolution Senator Melton passed last year to study economic development and job opportunities in the city. Senator Melton is excited to see the ways this legislation will truly transform the city, the region and the entire state of Indiana.
Mobile driver’s license
A proposal Senator Melton authored, Senate Bill 182, would have allowed Hoosiers to access their driver’s licenses on their mobile device. Although this particular bill did not pass, the legislature did approve the same language to be put into another proposal. House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1506 provides this convenient option for residents of Indiana.
Prekindergarten pilot program eligibility
Current law requires parents or guardians of a child to be working or attending job training or an educational program to be eligible for a pre-k program. Senator Melton authored SB 338 to change these requirements so that guardians who are disabled, retired or unable to work because they were ill or caring for a sick relative would still be able to enroll their child in pre-kindergarten. Although this bill failed to pass out of the Senate, language from my proposal was amended into HEA 1628 to remove unnecessary barriers to early education.
