Below are some of the bills Senator Stoops worked on during the 2019 legislative session.

Hoosier Safety First
This session, Senator Stoops fought hard to pass common-sense gun legislation. With gun violence and school shootings increasing across the nation, he introduced two practical bills that would have limited children and dangerous individuals from accessing guns. Senate Bill (SB) 307 would have mandated background checks for all individuals purchasing weapons and required all gun sales to be done through a licensed firearm dealer. SB 309 would have simply required gun owners to safely store their guns. Both proposals died without receiving a committee hearing, and my attempts to amend language from these proposals into the budget were defeated by the Republican supermajority.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
Senator Stoops also worked to make changes to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program with SB 440. The bill would have expanded TANF benefits to eligible individuals and ensured that updated data is used to determine program eligibility and the correct amount of benefit payouts. Unfortunately, this bill never made it out of the House of Representatives.

Fighting for Consumer Protection
As a member of the Senate Committee on Utilities, Senator Stoops fought to put Hoosiers energy independence back in their hands. Senator Stoops will continue the fight to protect Hoosiers from big utility companies.
